Matite in Viaggio

The pandemic period prevented me from attending the Matite in Viaggio festival in Mestre-Venezia. Every year, coming to MIV is overall the occasion of meeting good friends and fellow sketchers in an extraordinary inspiring and sumptuous city.

It is also a real pleasure to live a few days in Italy, to improve my low level of language and to enjoy their sophisticated quality of life.

I then returned to Chioggia, a fisherman old city in the south of the laguna, that I first discovered almost 30 years ago when I was studying in the Beaux-Arts school of Lyon.

PittaNaro

I had the immense privilege and the great pleasure to have been invited in Sicily at the end of August by Cendrine Bonami-Redler and Murielle Arcuri to attend to the event they organised called PittaNaro.

Ten Italian and French sketchers have been gathered for their various styles to come to the city of Naro, in the province of Agrigento, to draw its wonderful Baroque heritage.

After having followed a guided tour of the city we were free to go all over the city to lay on paper our feeling regarding the old streets and the numerous ochre churches and their huge richly ornate facades.

However this outstanding ensemble of Baroque churches has not been preserved so well over the years one can just fall under the charm of the grimacing figures of these old yellow sandstones.

To liven up this week, we had a day at the sea and another at the Greek temples of Agrigento.

Dolomiti

Last year, as I was participating for the first time to Matite in Viaggio, many people told me about the  Dolomites, a mountain range listed to the UNESCO world heritage.
I had never been there but I knew that these amazing rocky mountains with their singular shapes should be an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
Certainly, October is not the best time to come and hike in this area. This is the slack period between summer and winter, hike and ski. Almost no public transportation out of the urban area and many refuges are closed.
However, as I was coming back to Venezia this year, I planned a short stay at Cortina d'Ampezzo and two days hiking around the Falzárego Pass and stayed one night at the Lagazuoi Refuge.

From the sunrise to the sunset, I'm sketchingas much as I can : 24 watercolor sketchbook spreads in 2  days, 11 the first and 13 the second. There are plenty of trails and at every corner one has a new view on these sculptural summits.
I hope now to come back soon on the Alta via for a full trek. All the sketches on the following Flickr Album.
