Après les interminables voyages en bus dans le Nord andin, je prends un avion pour rejoindre rapidement le sud de la Patagonie.
After endless bus trips in the north, I catch a plane to reach southern Patagonia quickly.
Le court transfert de l'aéroport au centre-ville d'El Calafate me permet de constater le brutal changement de paysage. Le minibus longe un immense lac bleu turquoise, le Lago Argentino, qui n'est autre que le plus grand lac d'Argentine. Un vent frais souffle en continu, rien à voir avec le vent tempétueux et chaud du nord.
The short transfer from the airport to downtown El Calafate allows me to take in the sudden change of landscape. The minibus drives along a huge turquoise-blue lake, the Lago Argentino, which is Argentina's largest lake.
El Calafate is one of the few towns in the province of Santa Cruz. Built on the shores of the lake, it welcomes hundreds of visitors every day, who process past the Perito Moreno glacier to watch the inevitable fall of its seracs into the lake.
The journey between El Calafate and El Chaltèn makes me appreciate the dimensions of this extreme southern landscape. The gradual arrival on Fitz Roy at sunset is unforgettable. I sit at the front of the bus and can draw it in my sketchbook.
La localité d'El Chaltèn s'est essentiellement développée autour de la randonnée. Mais avec l'avènement des réseaux sociaux un tourisme de masse déferle sur les sentiers qui mènent aux glaciers et aux cimes acérées.
The town of El Chaltèn has developed mainly around hiking. But with the advent of social networks, mass tourism is invading the streets and the trails that lead to glaciers and sharp peaks.
Every day, hundreds of ill-equipped and uninformed people embark on a demanding 20km hike with 700m of ascent on the last two kilometers to Lago de Las Tres, to take a selfie in front of the iconic FitzRoy. For my part, despite the constant wind and the length of the hike, I managed to make 9 panoramic sketches
Pour parfaire cette expédition je me rends sur l'île de Terre de Feu dans la célèbre ville d'Ushuaia, la plus australe du monde. Avant d'arriver je crains d'être déçu. Or, en arrivant au bord du canal du Beagle, l'air de l'Antarctique se fait sentir. Les navires d'expédition polaires sont à quai dans le port dominé par de superbes sommets enneigés.
To complete this expedition, I head for the island of Tierra del Fuego, to the famous city of Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Before arriving, I'm afraid I'll be disappointed. But as I get at the edge of the Beagle Channel, I can feel the Antarctic air. Polar expedition ships dock in the harbor, dominated by magnificent snow-capped peaks.
Elle est là la grande surprise. Les paysages du bout du monde sont magnifiques. Je fais quelques excursions dans les montagnes et les lacs.
That was the big surprise. The landscapes at the end of the world are magnificent. I make a few excursions into the mountains and lakes.
I also take a boat trip along the canal to see and draw sea lions and elephant seals, southern cormorants and albatrosses around the Éclaireurs lighthouse.
De retour à Buenos Aires, je retourne dessiner quelques lieux emblématiques porteños comme ce marché couvert arts décos ou la librairie El Ateneo installée dans un ancien théâtre en compagnie de l'illustratrice de livres pour enfants Alexandra Clutterbuck.
Quel voyage !
Mais qu'ai-je vu de cet immense pays ?
Pas grand chose en somme.
Back in Buenos Aires, I return to draw some emblematic porteño landmarks, such as this Art Deco covered market and the El Ateneo bookshop housed in a former theater, in the company of the children's book illustrator Alexandra Clutterbuck.
What a trip!
But what have I seen of this immense country?
Not much, really.
